Transabdominal vs. transvaginal ultrasound

A transabdominal ultrasound uses a probe on the surface of the abdomen, commonly used in mid and late pregnancy. A transvaginal ultrasound is performed internally and can provide clearer images earlier in pregnancy or for certain gynaecological evaluations. Which approach is used depends on the stage of pregnancy or the specific reason for the scan.

Ultrasound for gynaecological evaluation

Beyond pregnancy, ultrasound is a key diagnostic tool for evaluating menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis. It also plays an important role in diagnosing causes of infertility and monitoring how fertility treatment is progressing.

Our commitment to ethical practice

Prenatal ultrasound in India is governed by the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, which strictly prohibits the determination of fetal sex — a critical legal safeguard against sex-selective practices. This is followed without exception, as both a legal requirement and a matter of ethical practice.

3D/4D scans: what they do (and don't) add

3D and 4D scans provide more detailed, lifelike images and can be a meaningful bonding experience for parents, but for a low-risk pregnancy they don't add diagnostic value beyond a standard scan. They're worth considering for the experience itself, not as a medical necessity.

Ultrasound during pregnancy

FOGSI (the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India) and the Government of India recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 scans during a normal, low-risk pregnancy, with additional monitoring for higher-risk pregnancies.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about ultrasound and diagnostic imaging.

Is ultrasound safe during pregnancy?

Yes — ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and there's no evidence it poses any risk to the developing baby.

How many ultrasound scans will I need during pregnancy?

FOGSI and the Government of India recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 scans for a normal, low-risk pregnancy, with more frequent monitoring for higher-risk pregnancies.

What is a dating scan?

An early scan, typically at 6 to 8 weeks, that confirms pregnancy, rules out ectopic pregnancy, and establishes gestational age.

What is the anomaly scan, and when is it done?

A detailed structural evaluation of the baby, typically performed between 18 and 22 weeks.

What's the difference between transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound?

Transabdominal uses a probe on the abdomen's surface; transvaginal is performed internally and can give clearer images earlier in pregnancy or for certain gynaecological evaluations.

Can ultrasound reveal the baby's sex?

By law under India's PCPNDT Act, fetal sex determination is strictly prohibited — this is followed without exception.

Is a 3D or 4D scan medically necessary?

For a low-risk pregnancy, 3D/4D scans don't add diagnostic value beyond a standard scan — they're more about the imaging experience than medical necessity.

Does Prana use ultrasound for gynaecological conditions, not just pregnancy?

Yes — ultrasound is used to evaluate menstrual irregularities, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts, endometriosis, and to help diagnose and monitor infertility treatment.

What areas does Prana serve for ultrasound and diagnostic imaging?

Patients travel from across Miyapur, Hafeezpet, Bachupally, Nizampet, Kukatpally, KPHB, and the surrounding northwest Hyderabad corridor.
